I found out two or so weeks ago, but it’s never too late to share!
I am overjoyed about being a Gilman scholar! And I am so thankful to them for awarding me this international scholarship.
I am traveling abroad this summer to study in South Korea, and being a diverse student and someone with a story to tell, I applied for the Gilman Scholarship early this year. I wasn’t expecting to win, but I sure was hoping!
Here are some tips for those who wish to apply in the future:
1. Start your essays as early as you can and finish them as early as you can. This way, you can get feedback from peers, professors, and your parents, which will help a lot!
2. Be truthful and be yourself in your essays. If you lie, that not only is bad for your conscience, but it’s horrible for those who take the time to read your essays. Not to mention for others who are applying. Be the best you can be.
3. Don’t freak out. There are a lot of materials that need submitting, and it can get overwhelming if you try to do everything at once. Just take it slow and finish what you can. Then make a list of things you will need to get a hold of, such as your high school transcripts.
There we go! I hope those of you who are reading this will consider applying if you are planning to study abroad. This scholarship takes a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it. Once you become a Gilman scholar, you are a part of something big. A community of peers and mentors who care about you. Good luck!
